Applications for a PhD scholarship are invited from interested and qualified candidates:

Research Topic:Development of energy storing photovoltaic (PV) quasi Z-source cascaded hbridge inverter (qZCHI) based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) using electric vehicle (EV) battery system.

Duration of Studentship: 3 years

Nature of support available:
This project is funded by the Ministry of Higher Education, (MOHE), Malaysia under the Fundamental Research Grant Scheme (FRGS). Thus, a full scholarship is available for this project, which include full tuition fee waiver, a monthly stipend of RM 2,100.00 for 3 years.

Project summary:
Multilevel CHI with separated direct current (DC) sources is certainly the most versatile power inverter topology for STATCOM applications to produce high-quality multistep sinusoidal alternating current (AC) waveform with minimum harmonics. However, the DC side of each level of h-bridge inverter requires an additional bidirectional DC-DC converter (i.e., two-stage system) to achieve four quadrants of operation; hence, resulting in high cost and complicated control of the converter. The emergence of qZHI demonstrates the benefit of being able to perform all DC-AC, AC-DC, DC-DC (i.e., buck-boost function), and AC-AC power conversions through a single-stage topology when compare with the counterpart. In this work, hybrid PV-battery qZCHI based STATCOM system will be studied and implemented to provide both active and reactive power (VAR) compensation at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC) of the grid under different loading conditions.


Eligibility:

  1. Master’s/Bachelor's degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (or relevant) with CGPA 2.8 and above.
  2. Fundamental understanding of converter and PWM based inverter.
  3. Working knowledge of C programming language and design software such as MATLAB/SIMULINK.
  4. Good communication skills and able to interact well with people.
  5. Fluent in written and spoken English.
  6. Proactive and able to carry out research independently.
  7. Strong reporting and documentation skills.
  8. Pleasant personality, hardworking, independent, self-motivated.
  9. Malaysian nationality.
