Curtin Malaysia academics attend talk on improving their research visibility and reputation

Miri – 5 April 2019 – The Library & Learning Commons at Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) recently collaborated with one of its vendors, Access Dunia, to conduct a talk entitled ‘Digital Outreach of Science: The New Trend of Digital Scholarship for Researchers’ for research-active academics at the university.

The speaker was K.C. Tang, a digital marketing consultant with Innovative Education Services (ies) Research Consulting, a Singapore-based regional consulting firm for the future skills of researchers, innovators and professionals focused on scholarly communication, research and outreach.

The objective of the talk was to introduce an ies proprietary platform which uses scientific methods to help researchers improve their research visibility and increase their chances of being cited. The platform combines the use of technology, social media and e-marketing to accelerate their chances of being seen online by reaching out to select research communities.

Tang said the platform is based on scientific research marketing, an innovation that facilitates technology-enabled outreach and engagement. He said that even though a research paper may be published in a renowned journal, it does not mean it will be cited after a year or two of publication. According to him, research impact will only be possible if researchers know how to engage with the right audiences.

The academics from Curtin Malaysia’s Faculty of Engineering and Science, Faculty of Business and Faculty of Humanities agreed that the platform, although relatively new, could prove to be a very effective way for academics to get more citations for their research.

KC Tang has over six years’ experience in the publishing industry specialising in digital implementation and content marketing. His regional clientele are primarily universities, research institutions and technology companies. As a digital marketing trainer, he develops and delivers workshops for university researchers and innovators to improve their research visibility.
