Curtin Malaysia in’s pick for ‘education in jaw-dropping locations’

Miri – 12 February 2018 – Curtin University Malaysia (Curtin Malaysia) has been listed among universities providing ‘education in jaw-dropping locations’, according to, one of the world’s leading higher education web portals which aims to empower the world’s students and connect them with the educational institutions and employers that best suit their skills and requirements.

Listed among four universities in an article entitled ‘The wanderlust list: Education in jaw-dropping locations’, Curtin Malaysia (formerly known as Curtin University Sarawak Malaysia) is said to offer students a truly global experience with international students from more than 45 countries and top-scholars globally, so they can be sure that they will have the chance to study in ‘a multicultural environment that gives them a real sense of home’.

“If location is what you’re after, then this is just the place. With a sprawling tropical rainforest right on its doorstep, astonishing coral reefs, clear ocean waters and exotic wildlife… it is nothing less than a nature lover’s paradise! And with the campus located in the thriving city of Miri, it’s the perfect point from which to take in this surrounding beauty,” the article states.

Other universities and locations in the portal’s pick were University of Otago in Dunedin, New Zealand; University of Queensland, Australia; and Washington State University Vancouver in Washington, USA.

Curtin Malaysia Pro Vice-Chancellor, President and Chief Executive Professor Jim Mienczakowski said, as Curtin University’s largest international campus and hub in Asia, Curtin Malaysia is proud to host both international and domestic students now numbering over 4,000 and enrolled in a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in engineering and science, business and humanities, as well as in its foundation programmes.

“The world-class education and global experience that comes hand-in-hand with international study is reason enough to explore a myriad of overseas opportunities. On top of enhancing their employable expertise, students have a choice of a wide range of universities offering their chosen disciplines, presenting a host of exciting options not available in their home countries,” said Professor Mienczakowski.

He added that entry to one’s institution of choice is not the only draw of the overseas study experience, it also provides a unique chance to see the world, to experience new countries, and opens one’s eyes to new outlooks, customs and activities. New locations can expose them to the natural wonders of the world, as well as local cultural landmarks and of course, beautiful landscapes.

“Our location in Borneo, with its natural attractions, rich cultural heritage and all the opportunities for study and adventure that comes with it, should be a choice destination for students with a bit of wanderlust,” Professor Mienczakowski declared.

He said studying overseas also works in their favour when it comes to employability. Reports often show that employers worldwide place increasing value on international experience when assessing graduate job applications. In fact, according to the biggest-ever survey on the subject, the QS Global Employer Survey Report, six out of 10 global employers claimed to give extra credit for international student experience, and more than 80 percent said they actively sought graduates who had studied overseas.

According to Professor Mienczakowski, Curtin has an ongoing three-week ‘Curtin’s Asia Study Tour’ mobility programme that allows students from its Perth campus to visit Borneo to broaden their perspectives and learn essential skills for dealing with new and different environments. Over 200 students from the main campus, mainly from the School of Design and the Built Environment, participated in the programme last year. Curtin Malaysia has also received over 130 other international students on the AsiaBound, AIESEC and New Colombo Plan programmes, as well as exchange programmes with partner universities and other mobility activities.

In addition to Curtin Malaysia in Miri, Sarawak, Curtin University has campuses in Perth, Western Australia, Singapore and Dubai; all offering high-quality, internationally recognised Curtin courses.

The University’s One Curtin strategy promotes movement of students between campuses for new insights into their areas of study, and its technologically advanced learning delivery modes offer students the opportunity to engage with students and staff at other campuses.

Curtin’s strong industry connections, high-impact research and a varied array of innovative courses make it an increasingly a university of choice for prospective students. This first-rate learning environments and other areas of excellence at its campuses has not gone unnoticed, with the university earning an impressive five-star overall excellence rating in the QS Stars University Ratings 2017.

In the global university rankings, Curtin University ranks in the top one percent of universities worldwide in the highly regarded Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) 2017 and rose significantly to 262nd position in the world in the QS World University Ranking (QSWUR) 2017-18.
