Curtin Sarawak Name Change and New Brand Image

Monday, 23 August, 2010

Curtin University of Technology, Sarawak Malaysia wishes to advise all its valued partners that we have officially changed our name to ‘Curtin University, Sarawak Malaysia’, effective immediately.

This change is in line with the current rebranding of our parent Curtin University of Technology to ‘Curtin University’.

The rebranding reflects two key changes in Curtin’s positioning: (1) focus on increasing its strength in research, and (2) focus on international operations.

Though Curtin’s legacy is Australian, it has transcended its natural heritage to become an internationally recognised brand. Curtin’s goal now is to be positioned amongst the top twenty universities in Asia by 2020, as Asia is where it sees its future growth.

This growth is expected to greatly outstrip domestic demand in Australia, Curtin already being the fifth largest university in Australia and the second largest in terms of international student intake. This inevitably means a significant shift in strategy, focusing on defined areas, and building a differentiated brand - being more than ‘technology’… Thus, the removal of the words ‘of Technology’ from its name.

As Curtin’s first and largest offshore campus, Curtin Sarawak’s new name and brand image highlights an even greater synergy with our main campus. In addition, the new name and image will have a positive effect on both domestic and international student enrolment potential as the University strives for growth in student numbers and research output.

The removal of the words ‘of Technology’ from our name will have no affect on student marketing efforts domestically or globally, or impact on our current students. Curtin will continue to invest significantly in its marketing activities and continue to provide the preferred tertiary education it is renowned for.

Preparations for new Curtin Sarawak marketing materials are underway, including our 2011 Prospectus, and we anticipate these documents to be available between September and November this year. All other necessary rebranded marketing material and internal documentation will be introduced throughout the course of 2010.

Curtin Sarawak apologises in advance for any confusion caused over the coming months as we implement this transition to our new name and brand image, however we hope you join us in celebrating the rebrand in what is an exciting time for the University.
