About Us

Hello!

At Curtin, we strive to enrich the lives of our students with experiences that will take them beyond the classroom and the mere aim of being employable. The Curtin Sarawak Leadership & Entrepreneurship Centre (LEC) was established in October 2013 as an effort to consolidate and drive student leadership and entrepreneurship initiatives further.

The Centre is now working closely with Curtin Leadership Centre in the main campus in Perth to enhance our leadership programmes that is largely centred on the ‘Social Change Model of Leadership Development’. The ‘Social Change Model of Leadership Development’ was developed in 1993 by the Higher Education Research Institute of UCLA, the theory stemmed from UCLA’s effort in understanding more on enhancing student learning and facilitating positive social change.

This model emphasises the need to understand self and others in an effort to create community change. The focus is less about the leader and more about the leadership community. The model views leadership as a process rather than as a position and is designed to enhance the development of leadership qualities in all participants. Values of equity, social justice, self-knowledge, personal empowerment, collaboration, citizenship, and service are explicitly promoted.

As an added initiative, LEC has also introduced a series of entrepreneurship workshops and boot-camp, and is now exploring possibility of providing incubation support for budding student entrepreneurs. Creation of businesses requires leadership and the know-how and at LEC, we hope to provide holistic support.

LEC also encourages community engagement among our students and staff. Community engagement pedagogies, often called ‘service learning’, are ones that combine learning goals and community service in ways that can enhance both student growth and the common good. Community engagement activities by LEC offer excellent opportunity for students to participate, volunteer, and organise their own programmes. By getting involved in ‘service learning’ activities, students create positive impacts for themselves as well as the community.

The Curtin Sarawak Leadership and Entrepreneurship Centre aims to provide a platform to equip young minds with the knowledge, skills and values to impact social change.
